Blackfeet Language

Saokio Heritage is a community-based organization created by Indigenous women, which works to educate and advocate for the revitalization of traditional ecological knowledge and Indigenous languages in a modern context.

We have two lexicons (or lists of words) to share.

Blackfeet Names of Plants Used by the Blackfeet, compiled by Saokio Heritage. This list includes over 100 names of plants used by the Blackfeet with their translation into English and scientific names. It can be used with a knowledgeable person or a good field guide to learn more about ethnobotanical or Indigenous plant knowledge.

Blackfeet Vocabulary Terms for Items of Material Culture, compiled by Rosalyn LaPier, with translator Shirlee Crow Shoe. This list includes over 300 words or terms used by the Blackfeet for various material objects from moccasins to blankets. Some of these words were used to create “word of the day” videos that can be found on our Saokio Heritage YouTube page.

Thank you for your interest in the Blackfeet (Amskapi Piikani) language!
